Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)-The
classic venereal diseases are those which have since long been
recognized as being sexually transmitted. These include
gonorrhea, syphilis, choncroid, lymphogranuloma genital scabies,
AIDS & genital warts etc. Thus there is a wide variety of
venereal infections.
Recently, there has been a rise in the incidence of STD.
This is because of
·
Increased promiscuity & permissiveness
·
The
easy availability of modern contraceptives
·
The injudicious use of antibiotics
·
Increased travel across the world & greater mingling of
·
populations Lack of sex education
Importance Radiotherapy & Chemotherapy in Gynaecology
Radiotherapy-Radiation therapy plays a vital role
& forms an integral part in any treatment protocol of malignant
neoplasms.
Chemotherapy- besides surgery and radiations, chemotherapy is an
important weapon to fight against gynecological cancers. It is
often used to eradicate the residual disease after surgery or in
causes of recurrence. Chemotherapy has largely replaced surgery
& radiation as the treatment of choice in certain kinds of
malignant trophoblastic neoplasia.
Disorders of
Menstruation-
In healthy women, menstruation sets in approximately between the
age of 12 & 14 years, and persists throughout the reproductive
period of life with an average rhythm, of 28 years and duration
of flow between 4 to 6 days. Menstrual disorders are considered
under the following heads:
1
Precocious menstruation-If the menstruation starts before the
age of 10, the condition is referred to as precocious
menstruation.
2
Amenorrhea-It is defined as absence of menstruation.
3
Pre-menstrual tension-It is seen in women in the forth decade of
life. It occurs in the pre-menstrual period for 3-6 days
or sometimes
longer. The usual complaints are headache,
tenderness of the breast, weight gain pre-menstrually.
4
Dysmenorrhoea-It is a condition in which the periods are
painful.
It is one of the common menstrual disorders.
5
Dysfunctional uterine haemorrhage-It means, abnormal uterine
bleeding in the absence of any demonstrable organic pelvic
pathology
The diagnosis is made by excluding all other laboratory
investigations.
The condition is seen in about 10% of gynaecological
admissions. It
mayoccur at any reproductive age but is frequent around
puberty &
menopause.
Pelvic
Inflammatory Diseases (PID)- PID
implies inflammation of upper genital tract involving the
fallopian tubes as well as the ovaries.
Causes of PID-
· A
common cause of PID is sexually transited diseases, the
incidence of which has risen in the past 20 years.
· In
India as in other developing countries, many deliveries are
conducted at home by Dais(untrained midwives)
· Minor
operative procedures like D/C & hysterosalpingogram can cause
ascending infection.
· The
use of intrauterine contraceptive devices has increased the
incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease
