WHAT ARE THE
QUALITIES OF A GOOD DOCTOR?
Communication skills
- The
doctor-patient relationship is built on the foundation of
communication, trust & mutual respect. The more he communicates
with his patients the better he can diagnose. A good doctor must
be a patient listener. He should be very pleasure and well
mannered.
Sensitivity-A
good doctor should be sensitive enough to respect the dignity of a
patient.
Availability-Availability
is one of the most important criterions to judge a doctor. It is
inevitable that patients have to wait for a doctor, but doctors
also should realize that the patient’s time is equally important.
Competence-Above
3 points may be of no use if the doctor is not competent. A good
doctor must have the ability to learn & think quickly & must be
competent enough to handle lots of things at the same time. What
patients expect from their doctors is that they make correct
diagnosis & give them the best possible
treatments in order to cure them. In this respect, competence &
more generally, human qualities & intelligence are often the
qualities that are the most sought for in doctors.
Team spirit-A
good doctor maintains good working relationship with his
colleagues & others in the profession. He also knows his own
limits & is willing to seek help of another doctor when he feels
necessary.
Cautious
approach to treatment-A
good doctor should always be cautious while writing prescriptions.
He should never under or over prescribe medicines. A good doctor
should revise his diagnosis treatment if he is going to write more
than three drugs.
Good human being-A
bad person cannot be honest towards his profession. So a good
doctor is essentially a good human being. His goodness will
continuously motivate him to search & implement the best options
for the patients who have laid trust in him.
Holistic
approach-A
good doctor should treat his patients in a holistic way. A good
doctor should be aware that no system of medicine is perfect,
while every system has something good to offer for the benefit of
the patient.
Role of an
educator-A
good doctor is an educator also. As an educator, a doctor should
be able to educate himself, other peers patients & health
stakeholders. A good doctor must help his patients identify the
underlying causes of their problems & educate them with preventive
measures.
Common sense-Doctors
with common sense hardly rely on laboratory tests for diagnosing
aliments. A good doctor prefers the simplest, easiest, & safest
treatment.
Religiousness-Many
doctors believe the religious belief helps one to become a good
doctor. A good doctor believes he is accountable to a higher
power. The beliefs about someone who can watch everything that a
person does, can make the person perform his best.
